Amelia as the Wicked Queen

This painting represents the choreographed dance moves of Ballet Des Moines professional dancer, Amelia. She wears a motion-sensing remote as she performs scenes from her role as the Evil Queen in ballet Snow White. Manibus simultaneously renders the dynamics of her movements into a painted work of art. Manibus was created by visual artist, Amenda Tate Corso. It is a robotic tool utilized to translate the ephemeral and dynamic movement of ballet into a sustaining work of art. The painting was created in two parts. During the first part, Ameila wore the sensor device to paint a dance solo of the Evil Queen in a regal purple. Secondarily, she performed another scene from the production in which the Queen is behind a scrim. It is painted atop the first in gray. This conceptualizes both the overt and hidden agendas of the Queen. The results were far from identical in painted form. Each time, the results of Amelia’s efforts bore distinctly unique marks and variances. This is a testament to the ideology that time can never exactly reproduce itself despite our best human efforts.
